Do I understand correctly that you are unable to get any files at all to import? FCP just does not import or open files of any type. I've also only found that re-saving from a different program on the same Mac works. I did think of that, but have not checked it out yet. I am thinking that it must be either a minor thing I am overlooking or something is wrong with some settings somewhere. You can get 200 gigs or more for about a hundred and fifty bucks. I also deleted my ID and re-registered my serial.

Try resaving or re-exporting the file through either Compressor or QuickTime Player.

We recently upgraded to FCP 7 and have been having this File Error issue. You could try backing up your preferences, then trashing them. Getting the job done, but there's got to be a better way. The problem is the videos' file headers often become corrupted when downloading from YouTube with one of those third party plugins.
I didn't try the others because (a.) I don't own a camera, and (b.) I have no idea of what "Anamorphic Basic" means.
